Frequently Asked Questions

Protective Prevention

Protective Prevention is a total system of preventive care Dr Donnelly provides and has been offering his clients since 2005.

By guiding our clients into dental health and wellness through Protective Prevention, they experience long stretches of predictability needing virtually nothing other than seeing a hygienist for periodic professional cleanings and our dentist for an annual exam to ensure health and wellness are being upheld.

Preventing cavities, pain, root canals, dental implants and dentures is our passion and pleasure. We are proud of our clients’ success stories and low incidences of emergencies and tooth loss in our long-term Protective Prevention client base.

Examples of Protective Prevention are:

  • Preventing tooth loss by strengthening weak and vulnerable teeth with full coverage restorations.
  • Preventing extreme wear and tooth loss by fixing the destructive forces caused by a problematic bite as early in life as possible. It’s never too late with Invisalign®.
  • Preventing future crowns and root canals by filling and sealing imperfections that invaginate into a tooth and retain food after a meal.
  • Sealing these vulnerable infolded areas with fillings to protect them from decay is similar to sealing the grooves between and on top of the wood of new hardwood floors to protect them.
  • Filling imperfections such as deep folds and grooves in teeth will eliminate areas that hold food inside the tooth after a meal; when the grooves are filled, the food sits on top of the filling that seals the groove much like how sand sits on top of the acrylic sealer that protects the wood of a hardwood floor rather than getting in between the joints.
  • Grooves that fold into a tooth are impossible to keep clean and are the most vulnerable areas of a tooth to get cavities… even when being 110% with homecare.

Dr Donnelly and his team have been offering Protective Prevention to clients that deeply care for and value their teeth since 2005.

Try something fun and eat some dark chocolate. Now brush and floss your teeth the best you can for as long as you want.

After brushing for as long as you’d like, look in the mirror at the chewing surfaces of your back teeth and check for chocolate lingering in the infolded grooves of your back teeth.

These infolded areas are the most vulnerable areas where cavities will start.

Fill them with sealants rather than ongoing food filling them.

If you have deep genetic grooves that infold into the tooth, you will still see chocolate in these grooves and be a great candidate for Protective Prevention with us.

Invisalign® and Orthodontics

Invisalign® is a brand name of clear aligners used to gently move teeth into better positions and is used to correct problems with smiles and bites.

Invisalign® is an alternative to traditional braces and has revolutionized the way we treat adults and teens who want to keep their orthodontic treatment discreet and virtually invisible to others.

The energy used to move the teeth is stored within the flexible clear aligner that is placed over the teeth.

The stored energy in each tray takes one week of continuous wear to transfer to the teeth.

Depending on how far the teeth need to travel to get to their ideal position will determine how many trays are required in the sequence of treatment.

Each week, a brand-new tray is taken out of its package and placed over the teeth to move the teeth in the direction toward the end goal.

Each aligner in the series of trays transfers the energy gently to the teeth and comfortably moves the teeth to completion within 1-12 months in most cases.

For some cases, we don’t need to see you after we set you up and deliver you the series of aligners at the first appointment, however we would prefer to see you at key stages throughout treatment to ensure the teeth are tracking with the aligners.

Some cases require us to see you at least once or twice through treatment to smooth a tight contact or to place an additional attachment at a key interval.

It’s best to see us every 2-3 months throughout your Invisalign® care with us if your schedule permits.

Each person’s treatment is unique to them and the time and cost to treat will vary slightly.

Since the treatment is delivered over time, some clients choose to finance the cost of treatment to a fixed monthly payment as low as $149 per month.

We can help you determine exactly how much it will cost, what it will look like, and how long it will take by seeing you for a quick same-day complimentary digital scan and photos of your teeth and smile.

Invisalign® is best suited for teens and adults, and can be used for children who follow instructions well and won’t lose or misplace the trays.

Absolutely! You may eat a light meal that doesn’t require much chewing with the clear aligners in place.

You can drink liquids with the clear aligners in place.

You can pretty much do anything - skydive, zipline, scuba, atv, jog, ski, hike, and sleep with the clear aligners in place.

The clear aligners may be taken out to have a significant meal and to brush and floss.

You can lightly brush and rinse the clear aligners when you are cleaning your teeth.

Traditional braces are brackets that are individually fixed to each tooth like a handle to receive flexible wires, elastics, and springs as gentle forces to move teeth into a better position.

Like Invisalign®, traditional braces gently move teeth into better positions and is used to correct problems with smiles and bites.

Braces are usually made of a bio-compatible metal.

Braces are best suited for young children and for any people who feel they may misplace or lose Invisalign® aligners.

Since braces are fixed to the teeth and cannot come out, they do not require as much cooperation and as many instructions to be followed.

Depending on how far the teeth need to travel to get to their ideal position will determine how long the braces are required to be on the teeth in the sequence of treatment.

Most cases will take approximately 3-18 months to complete.

We can help you determine exactly how much it will cost, what it will look like, and a better estimate of how long it will take by seeing you for a quick same day complimentary digital scan and photos of your teeth and smile.

A daily brushing and water-picking or flossing are important throughout treatment to remove the daily food that gets caught within the appliance.

Braces are a better treatment option for those who feel they may lose or misplace the Invisalign® clear aligners.

Cases with large tooth rotations are better treated with braces as are cases with ectopically positioned teeth; our dental professionals will point this out if your request is not ideal to what is possible.

For young growing children, we offer early interceptive treatment to grow space and prevent excess crowding that leads to the need to extract teeth later; early palatal expansion and incisor alignment provides the growth of arch width and length required to prevent the need for extractions later.

Early interceptive treatment for young children can also prevent the need for jaw surgery to correct large overjet, overbite and underbite cases; call us at for an opinion if the upper front incisor teeth appear too far forward or too far back.

Carriere motion appliance therapy can be used before Invisalign® in adults as a non-surgical compromise to fix an underbite, overbite and overjet.

You can seldomly, but we wouldn’t recommend it because the upper and lower teeth may not fit properly together after treatment.

Teeth in one arch don’t work on their own, they work together by moving the bottom teeth against the top teeth - if you change the shape of one arch only you may have a nice smile with a bad bite and a very unstable quick-to-relapse result.

We feel it’s more advantageous and beneficial to do it right, do it once and ensure the arches fit together at the end of treatment.

Removing teeth for orthodontic purposes does not usually occur anymore if we can intercept the orthodontic problem early enough in a child’s life before they stop dentally growing around 12 years old.

While children are still growing, we can expand and lengthen dental arches to grow new space to prevent extractions.

The smile and bite work together, so we feel it best to treat the smile and bite together.

Dr Donnelly chooses sound tooth positions to place the teeth into with Invisalign® because he likes to correct problems with the bite at the same time as moving the smiling teeth into better esthetic positions at no extra cost.

Dr Donnelly draws fully upon his background in treating Sleep Apnea, TMJ disorders, headaches, migraines and smile rejuvenation and reconstruction because if carefully considered, the new Invisalign® tooth positions can create unexpected improvements in all these areas because all dental disciplines are considered as being connected intrinsically to the smile and bite.

Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder where a person's normal breathing is interrupted and stopped multiple times per hour each time the lower jaw and tongue relax and fall back to block the airway. Sleep Apnea leads to excessive daytime sleepiness, heart complications and numerous other health problems.

A CPAP machine is primarily used to treat mild, moderate, and severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Some people tolerate a CPAP well with no problems experienced and should continue benefitting from the CPAP machine. Many people have problems and struggle with their CPAP machine and search for an alternative therapy for their Sleep Apnea.

For those who struggle with CPAP there is hope.

We treat Sleep Apnea with a wonderfully engineered medical grade dental appliance.

While sleeping, our dental appliance gently holds the lower jaw and tongue forward keeping the natural airway open eliminating the need for CPAP in mild and moderate Sleep Apnea clients.

Our dental appliance may also be worn with the CPAP machine for combined therapy.

For severe sleep apnea, our dental appliance worn with a CPAP machine offers the most effective air flow to the lungs.

This is very common and why most people search for an alternate Sleep Apnea therapy using a medical grade dental appliance that is effective.

Yes! We fabricate a comfortable medical grade dental appliance that gently holds the lower jaw and tongue forward keeping your natural airway open and reduces snoring at the same time in 90% of our clients. It is called a mandibular repositioning appliance. This mandibular repositioning appliance is very effective on its own for treating mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea and can be worn in conjunction with CPAP for combined therapy. Severe Sleep Apnea clients can be treated using a dental appliance and CPAP together for the most effective combined therapy.

Yes! The dental appliance used to treat Sleep Apnea and Snoring also acts as an orthodontic retainer and treats clenching and grinding at the same time eliminating nighttime wear and tear on your teeth.

At our complimentary consult with you, in less than 5 minutes we will take your digital tooth and bite impression. It’s quick, simple, and digital so it’s not messy. Our appliance is low profile with minimal bulk and custom made to fit seamlessly over your upper and lower teeth and takes about a week to create.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants are mini foundations placed where teeth are missing, and are used to anchor bone and secure replacement teeth.

Dental implants are mainly made of biocompatible titanium.

Most people who have lost or are losing a tooth or teeth would consider a dental implant to replace what is lost.

Folks who suffer from loose dentures consider dental implants to secure and anchor their denture or to replace their dentures with secure low profile fixed bridges that remain permanently in their mouth much like their original teeth.

We recommend considering Protective Prevention on the remaining teeth to prevent more tooth loss; we feel one missing tooth is enough to experience in life.

A cosmetic smile rejuvenation is a nice treat to consider and provide yourself if it was extreme wear and tear that led to tooth loss and dental implant need.

It’s a fun fact that dental implants and the bone they are placed in does not have any pain receptors.

When recovering from dental implant placement, the soft tissue in the surgical areas can be tender for a few days and be easily managed with pain medications and rinses.

Dental implant placement recovery is easier than the previous tooth removal recovery.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic Dentistry typically refers to special treatments that rejuvenate and reconstruct teeth; these are typically elective treatments that people want to do rather than need to do.

In two discreet visits with us it is easily possible to restore your smile to what you used to have, or what you always longed to have.

Cosmetic Dentistry is a wonderful treat to defy aging; a smile has far more impact to consider before plastic surgery.

Our smile can be one of our best features to open more doors for us in life.
