Emergency Dental Care

emergency dental care

Unforeseen dental problems can occur at any time and delaying treatment can lead to further damage. When you have an emergency, it is important that you remain calm, take appropriate first aid steps and be sure to call our practice as soon as possible for treatment.    If you need immediate attention after hours, call our emergency phone number and our on-call Doctor and staff member will help you.

Dental emergencies are a common occurrence in life and it is important to know how to deal with them safely and efficiently.    They require prompt intervention to ensure that your regular lifestyle resumes sooner rather than later and to avoid further worsening of a condition that may lead to more costly treatment at a later date.

The following are some examples of what are considered to be common dental emergencies:

  • Chipped or Cracked teeth
  • Teeth that have been knocked out or “displaced”
  • Severe toothache
  • Broken Jaw
  • Cut lip, gums or tongue
  • Object caught between the teeth
  • Broken wire/Orthodontic appliance

If you experience a dental emergency, here is what we suggest:

  •  Don’t Panic!
  • Call our office or access our after-hours emergency care line for assistance
  • Try to stop the bleeding by using pressure
  • Try to clean the wound as best as you can
  • Use Ice pack to minimize swelling
  • Lose a tooth? →If you can, rinse the tooth under water and insert it into the socket … but DO NOT FORCE IT INTO PLACE!!!  See our dentist as soon as possible!!!→Next best option:  SAVE THE TOOTH in a container of milk and bring it with you to see our dentist.   DO NOT SCRUB IT!  We want to try to preserve any tissue still attached.   (milk keeps the tooth structures from drying out and can make it possible to reattach your tooth in many cases.)  You must ACT QUICKLY!
  • For broken wires / appliances that are poking cheeks and gums a bit of orthodontic wax, chewing gum or a gauze pad can be placed over the offending wire until you see our dentist.

When you arrive at Northwest Dental Centre for your emergency visit, know that you are in good hands!   Our Doctors will assess your emergency by completing an examination and taking x-rays of the damaged area.   Your initial concerns will be taken care of as quickly as possible and if you require further check- ups or treatment, we would be happy to accommodate you in our regular schedule.

At Northwest Dental Centre we are open 6 days per week and we offer emergency assistance 24/7 just for you!  Dr. Donnelly, his associates and staff work very hard to be there for you in your times of need, however on the rare occasion that you require immediate assistance due to extreme trauma please do not hesitate to access your nearest Alberta Emergency Care Facility or call 911 for assistance.
